Rachel: What brought you to DC?
Emily: My parents!  I’ve lived in the DC area since I moved here as an infant in 1984.

Rachel: You helped organize Adult Field Day at Marie Reed to benefit Yachad.  What was that like?
Emily:  Very fun.  I was a camp counselor for many years and this brought me right back to my camp days, which was wonderful.  Raising money for a worthy cause made it even better.  We went back to Marie Reed a few months after field day to help beautify the school before the academic year started.  I hope the kids like the bright colors as much as we did!

Rachel: Do you volunteer a lot in DC?
Emily: I like to think I do, but there’s always room for more volunteering.  I have led a few 2239 service projects in the area.  Just last weekend, we cleaned and repainted the shutters of the historic Great Falls Tavern on the C&O Canal.  The shutters hadn’t been repainted since they first were installed in 1997 and we had to use a historically accurate shade of green.  I’ve also gone on a few service trips with 2239’s ARK (Acts of Religious Kindness).  We went to Birmingham, Alabama, where we helped repair a woman’s house that was destroyed in a tornado and New Orleans, Louisiana where we did some repair work in the Ninth Ward and helped with some efforts to improve the wetlands, which were damaged in Hurricane Katrina.

Rachel: What is your favorite Jewish food?
Emily: NPR had this latke double down sandwich on their website last year that I recreated at home, but instead of brisket, I used lox.  Use leftover latkes as “bread” and put sour cream, applesauce and lox in between.  It is amazing.  I’m excited that this year the second night of Hanukkah is the same as Thanksgiving.  I am looking forward to turkey, latkes, and green bean casserole!

Rachel: What else do you do for fun?
Emily: I am a partial season ticket holder for the Nationals, so I go to a lot of baseball games.  I am also a runner — one of my favorite races is the American Odyssey Relay, a fabulous 200 mile relay race where we run 200 miles from Gettysburg to DC.  I also play in a few sports leagues and I’m a self-diagnosed news junkie, which means I usually have my nose in a book or the newspaper.
