Rachel: What brought you to DC?
Matt: I grew up in Florida and had lived in Florida my whole life. I wanted to live somewhere new, to meet new people, and to experience some of the things that Florida doesn’t have to offer. Ever since I spent a summer in DC in college interning on the Hill, I had wanted to move here. I love the city, and I know a good amount of people here. So, a couple months ago, after spending years contemplating making the move, I decided to just do it. And, here I am.
Rachel: We heard you’re a pro a Jewish geography. How do you do it?
Matt: I was a Jewish geography minor in college, which taught me that if you put approximately five Jews in a room together, odds are at least two of them are going to have a friend in common. I believe the equation they’re teaching these days is J x 5 = “OMG, do you know _______.” Also, my last name is Jaffe, which is a fairly common Jewish last name, so sometimes people think they know me. Sadly, I have yet to meet someone who actually knows a Jaffe who I know. I guess I can also attribute my Jewish geography success to the facts that I went to Jewish camp, did USY in high school, and went to UF for undergrad, which has more Jews than any other public school in the country.
Rachel: We also heard you were a Jewish summer camp kid. What is a favorite memory?
Matt: Shout out to anyone who went to Camp Ramah Darom. I first kissed a girl in camp, so I’m going to have to go with that memory. I was walking my camp girlfriend back to her cabin after the night activities, which, as anyone who went to camp knows, is the standard way to try to “get some” when in camp. I was really nervous because I knew I was going to go for it, but it went pretty smoothly considering I had braces back then. I guess you could say I’m a natural.
Rachel: What is your favorite Jewish food?
Matt: Matza brei, except on Passover.
Rachel: Who is the coolest Jew?
Matt: Neil Strauss, author of “The Game.”
Rachel: Finish the sentence: When the Jews gather…
Matt: You better bring some tissues. Allergy season is nuts out here.
