Lots of Middle East-Related DC Events This Week

DC young professionals interested in learning about various facets of the Middle East conflict are in for an intense week.  Not only can they look forward to a steady stream of news about the impending Palestinian statehood bid at the UN, they can also attend a number of regionally-focused events taking place in DC this week.

Sixth Annual Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Lecture

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen and New York Times columnist David Brooks will discuss leadership and security challenges in the world today, focusing on the role of the armed forces as a moral, cultural and humanitarian force.

OneVoice

OneVoice is an international grassroots movement that aims to amplify the voices of Israeli and Palestinian moderates and empower them to demand a two-state solution. Israeli and Palestinian youth leaders will discuss the United Nations vote on Palestinian statehood, the regional unrest, and the potential impact on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Two representatives, from each respective side, will provide an insider’s perspective on the political atmosphere and the daily lives of their fellow citizens in the midst of rising tensions.

There are two possible times and venues for this event.

Discussion on Israeli-Turkish Relations

Hear from a regional researcher at the Foreign Policy Institute at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).  The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session and a light lunch will be served.

Lecture: Can the Israeli-Palestinian Be Saved?

Israeli Major General (ret.) Danny Rothschild discusses whether Israeli-Palestinian peace process be saved, in light of unilateral Palestinian actions at the United Nations this month.

Rothschild is the Director of the Institute for Policy and Strategy (IPS) at the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya and is the Chairman of the Annual Herzliya Conference Series on the Balance of Israel’s National Security. During his service as Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, Rothschild played a significant role in the negotiations that led to Israel’s peace agreements with Jordan and with the Palestinians.
